How GPA Is Calculated
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing all the products (quality points), then dividing by total credit hours. A course worth 3 credits with a B (3.0 points) contributes 9 quality points. A 4-credit A (4.0) contributes 16 quality points. Heavier courses have more influence on your GPA.
Unweighted vs Weighted GPA
Most colleges use an unweighted 4.0 scale. Some high schools use a weighted scale that adds 0.5 or 1.0 points for AP, IB, or honours courses (so an A in AP class = 5.0 rather than 4.0). This calculator uses the standard unweighted 4.0 scale used by most universities for admissions and GPA reporting.
What GPA Is Needed for Graduate School?
Most graduate programmes require a minimum 3.0 GPA. Top law schools (T14) expect 3.7–3.9. Medical schools average admitted GPA: ~3.7. MBA programmes vary widely, with top schools averaging 3.5+. For scholarships, academic honours typically start at 3.5 (cum laude) and 3.7+ (magna cum laude).
