How Much Do You Need to Retire?

The most widely used retirement planning benchmark is the 4% rule: your retirement portfolio should be 25× your annual expenses. If you need $60,000/year, you need $1.5 million saved. This rule comes from the Trinity Study, which found a 4% withdrawal rate from a balanced portfolio has historically lasted 30+ years.

The Power of Starting Early

Contributing $500/month from age 25 at 7% return grows to ~$1.37M by 65. Starting at 35 gives only ~$606K. The 10-year head start is worth $760,000 due to compound interest. Every year you wait costs you significantly more than the contributions themselves.

The FIRE Movement

Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE) applies the same 4% rule but with an accelerated timeline. To retire at 45 instead of 65, you need the same nest egg (25× expenses) but in half the time — requiring aggressive savings rates of 50–70% of income. Use this calculator to model different retirement ages.
