What Is CPM and How Is It Calculated?
CPM stands for Cost Per Mille (mille = Latin for thousand) — the cost of 1,000 ad impressions. CPM = (Total Cost / Total Impressions) × 1,000. It's the standard pricing model for display advertising, video ads, and social media campaigns. Advertisers use CPM to budget campaigns; publishers use it to estimate revenue.
CPM vs CPC vs CPA
CPM — pay per 1,000 impressions (best for brand awareness). CPC — Cost Per Click, pay only when someone clicks (best for driving traffic). CPA — Cost Per Acquisition, pay only when a conversion occurs (best for direct response). Google, Meta, YouTube, and most ad platforms offer all three models.
Typical CPM Rates by Platform (2026)
Google Display Network: $1–$5. YouTube: $3–$30 depending on niche. Facebook/Instagram: $5–$15. LinkedIn: $25–$80 (highest due to professional audience). TikTok: $5–$10. Twitter/X: $3–$10.
