How to Calculate Fuel Costs for Any Trip
Fuel is one of the biggest variable expenses for most households — and most people significantly underestimate how much they spend annually. This free fuel cost calculator gives you the exact cost for any trip, your weekly commute, and your projected annual fuel spend based on real numbers.
The Fuel Cost Formula
For MPG: Cost = (Distance ÷ MPG) × Price per gallon. For metric: Cost = (Distance × L/100km ÷ 100) × Price per litre. Simple in principle, but easy to miscalculate — especially when factoring in return trips, weekly frequency, and annual projections. This calculator handles all of it automatically.
How Much Does Fuel Cost Per Year?
The average American drives about 13,500 miles per year. In a 28 MPG vehicle at $3.50/gallon, that's approximately $1,688/year in fuel. A more efficient 40 MPG hybrid cuts that to $1,181/year — saving over $500. An electric vehicle at $0.16/kWh averaging 3.5 miles/kWh costs about $617/year — less than half the gas cost.
Fuel Efficiency Tips
Tyre pressure at the correct PSI improves fuel economy by up to 3%. Smooth acceleration and braking saves 10–40% vs aggressive driving. Removing roof racks when not in use reduces aerodynamic drag. Air conditioning increases fuel consumption by 5–25% depending on conditions and vehicle.
