How Much Should You Tip in 2026?

Tipping culture has evolved significantly, especially in the US. This free tip calculator takes the mental arithmetic out of the equation — just enter your bill and how many people are splitting it, and you'll get the total, tip, and per-person amounts in seconds.

Standard Tipping Rates in the US (2026)

Restaurants (sit-down): 18–20% for standard service, 25%+ for exceptional service. Delivery services: 15–20% of the order total, minimum $3–5. Bars: $1–2 per drink, or 15–20% of the tab. Hotels: $2–5 per night for housekeeping, $1–2 per bag for bellhops. Hair/beauty: 15–25% of the service cost.

How to Split the Bill Fairly

When splitting with a group, the simplest approach is to divide the total (bill + tip) equally between all diners. If some people had more expensive items, each person can calculate their share of the bill before tip, then add their proportional share of the tip. This calculator uses the equal-split method for simplicity.

Should You Tip on Pre-Tax or Post-Tax?

Technically, tips should be calculated on the pre-tax amount since the restaurant didn't provide a service on the tax portion. However, most people in practice tip on the full post-tax total, which is a minor difference. This calculator works on the amount you enter, so just enter either pre- or post-tax as you prefer.
